XGS Technologies Explained

As technology needs continue to rapidly evolve, building 100% fiberoptic futureproof networks is a must. XGS, or XGS-PON, has become the de facto standard for meeting the Multi-Gig bandwidth needs of residential and business customers.

While broadband Internet service at the speed of 10Gbps may seem excessive for ordinary subscribers today, remember that just 10 years ago, most households were using less than 20Mbps of bandwidth, and 20 years back, service speeds were less than 1Mbps. XGS is the next generation of speed, and will facilitate an increase in bandwidth consumption driven by more demanding content and services, such as 4K/8K video, videoconferencing, augmented reality and virtual reality, gaming, remote working, distance learning, and telemedicine.

XGS-PON, which stands for 10 Gigabit Symmetrical Passive Optical Network, is an updated standard for passive optical network (PON) fiber-based transmission technology which supports high-speed 10 Gigabit per second (Gbps) symmetrical (i.e. downstream & upstream) data transfers.

For the past 10 years, the most widely used fiber technology was GPON, or Gigabit Passive Optical Network. GPON allowed connections up to 2.488Gbps downstream and 1.244Gbps upstream. GPON is how Optico Fiber has provided its Gigabit broadband service since 2013.

With the introduction of XGS technology, Optico Fiber has been working to migrate its network from GPON to XGS-PON without interrupting its existing network services and without impacting existing customers. Working closely with our vendors, we achieved a “combination network” – which allows us to operation both GPON and XGS-PON over the same optical network. This allows us to upgrade any existing customer from our GPON network to the Multi-Gigabit XGS network by just changing the customer’s network box.

This major network investment into XGS technology is to ensure that our customers enjoy superior high-speed Internet & voice services – both residential & commercial. Optico Fiber is proud to continue its history of pioneering and revolutionizing Internet services in Puerto Rico.
